As a first degree (1st Dan) Black Belt you have completed your basic training. Now is the time to learn your patterns to a greater depth whilst also learning two new patterns, the second being the pattern Po-Eun.
Po-Eun is the pseudonym of a loyal subject Chong-Mong-Chu (1337 – 1392), a famous poet whose poem “I would not serve a second master though I might be crucified a hundred times” is known by every Korean. He is honoured through the pattern Po-Eun. At the age of 23 he became a civil servant and held positions of great respect in the government, faithfully serving King U until his death in 1392. Chong Mong Chu (also written Jeong Mong-Ju) was instrumental in representing Korea in peace talks with both China and Japan in several diplomatic missions. He was finally murdered by 5 men on the Sonjukkyo bridge in Kaesong, now in North Korea, the bridge being a monument to Po_Eun. There is a brown stain on one of the bridge’s stones that is said to turn red like Po-Eun’s blood whenever it rains.
