Signified by a yellow belt around the student’s waist, Grade 8 indicates that she has made some progress and has committed significant time to improving herself. Besides learning this new pattern, Dan Gun Hyong, students are also introduced to working with a partner through 3-step Sparring.
Dan Gun is the legendary founder of Korea in 2333BC. In a mythical story of creation the god Hwanin sent his son Hwang-Ung down from Heaven to the East where he settled at the Heaven Lake upon Paektu Mountain. Hwang-Ung was approached by a Tiger and a Bear wanting to be transformed into humans. They were sent into a cave but the Tiger did not last very long, only the Bear lasted the full 21 days and was transformed into a woman. She then bore Hwang-Ung a son named Dan-Gun who gave rise to the first Korean Dynasty (2333BC – 1082BC) called the Gojoseon Kingdom. October 3rd is celebrated in Korea to commemorate the founding father Dan-Gun, who has given national pride to the Korean people for centuries.
1. Move the left foot 90˚ left into right back stance and execute twin knife-hand block.
2. Move the right foot forward into right forward stance and execute a high section punch.
3. Move the right foot 180˚ clockwise into left back stance and execute twin knife-hand block.
4. Move the left foot forward into left forward stance and execute a high section punch.
5. Move the left foot 90˚ into left forward stance and execute a left low section block.
6. Step forward into right forward stance and execute a right high section punch.
7. Step forward into left forward stance and execute a left high section punch.
8. Step forward into right forward stance and execute a right high section punch.
9. Move the left foot, rotating counter-clockwise -90˚ into right back stance, execute a double forearm block.
10. Step forward into right forward stance and execute a right high section punch.
11. Move the right foot clockwise 180˚into left back stance and execute a double forearm block.
12. Step forward into left forward stance and execute a left high section punch.
13. Move the left foot 90˚ towards the starting position into left forward stance and execute a left low section block.
14. Quickly follow with a left high section block.
15. Step forward into right forward stance and execute a right high section block.
16. Step forward into left forward stance and execute a left high section block.
17. Step forward into right forward stance and execute a right high section block.
18. Pivoting on the right foot, rotate -counter-clockwise into right back stance and execute a left knife hand strike.
19. Step forward into right forward stance and execute a right high section punch.
20. Turn clockwise, moving the right foot into left back stance and execute a right knife hand strike.
21. Step forward into left forward stance and execute a left high section punch (Kyup).
