Brown signifies the ‘earth’ where a tree finally fixes itself firmly. This is when the student’s knowledge of the Art consolidates and she starts to have full confidence in her achievements. Through the pattern Hwa Rang students will learn what it is to become skilled in martial ways as did the youth of the distant past.
The pattern Hwa-Rang was the first pattern devised in the Ch’ang Hon Tae Kwon-Do system and was created in 1955 in Korea by Colonel Nam Tae Hi and Sergeant Han Cha Kyo. It is named after the Hwa-Rang, who were also known as the Flowering Knights, skilled in martial ways but also in cultural history, etiquette and religious teachings. These warriors came from Silla, a Kingdom at the southern end of the Korean peninsula in the late 6th and early 7th Century, lasting until the 10th Century, some hundreds of years before the Samurai arose in Japan. They were instrumental in the unification of the Korean Peninsula Kingdoms into a single unified country. The 29 movements represent the 29th Infantry Division of the Korean Army where Tae Kwon-Do was developed. The 29th Infantry Division was formed in 1953 on Je-Ju Island and uses a clenched fist as it’s Divisional Emblem.
