Congratulations on being promoted to 1st Dan Black Belt in Rhee Tae Kwon-Do. This is a great honour and a terrific accomplishment. Only approximately 3% of those who begin their training will actually reach this level. But remember, you have now just graduated Primary School and there is a long way to go. As a 1st Dan, now is the time to consolidate your knowledge. One of the best ways to learn is to teach. So consider becoming an assistant instructor.
Firstly, place Master Rhee’s name on your left such that when you look down you are reminded who is our Master Instructor. This also means that you will never drag the name of our Master across the floor as you tie your belt.
Pass the long end of the belt twice around your waist. Ensure that the second wrap overlays the first.
Pass the long end of your belt over the short end, completing 2 wraps. Then pass it up and under the 2 wraps.
Complete the knot by folding the left end across and under the right end. Then bring the right end up through the loop formed. This completes the ‘reef knot‘.
The knot is now complete. Master Rhee’s name will be on your right and easily read by others who look at your belt. Your own name will be ‘up-side-down’ to others but easily read by yourself. Perhaps an easy reminder for our more ‘senior’ members.
Hold your belt as shown. Now the writing on your belt will remind all that you are a student of Master Chong Hyup Rhee.
Be proud of your 1st Dan Black Belt in Rhee Tae Kwon-Do. One day you too could become an instructor.
